Born and raised in the birthplace of blues,
Chicago, Illinois, Mac Lil’ doesn’t take his musical roots for granted
at all. Having the ability to virtually be in the heart and soul of
Chicago and in the south visiting his families in such places like
Arlington, Dallas and Little Rock, he was able to learn a lot about
culture, class and the difference a little geography can really do for a
person.
Being the black sheep in his family (the only one
with a taste for music), he decided at a young age to take part in music
the only way he knew how: his church choir. At the young age of 6, he
was already heavily invloved in his choir, at age 8 he bought his first
tape, rumoured to be that of none other than, Marvin Gaye.
Some of Mac Lil’ first influences were old skool
R&B that spoke of injustice, the realities of growing up and being black
such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder but some of them were about love and
acceptance, The Isley Brothers and Michael Jackson. As he grew older he
slowly got into hip hop; Run DMC, Queen Latifah and LL Cool J. Mac Lil’
took all these influences and created a world unto himself, a world
where life is a struggle but there is much love to be had.
His main inspiration for becoming an artist began
when he attended a Janet Jackson concert at the age of 10. He was so
mesmerized by the power that she had, being able to hold the audience in
such a state of rapture, he felt that if only he had that ability, he
would offer not only himself but the world. He believed that by becoming
an artist he could reach millions with his message; the message of a
hard life with great triumphs.
Lyrically, Mac Lil’ is anything but mediocre. He
strives for honesty and maturity in his work. He is not burdened that
his work is different from other hip hop artists. He truly believes that
the masses need to hear a different voice that speaks the truth---that
voice is his. |
